This is particularly useful where a building has grown and multiple comms spaces exist, or multiple cabinets. In this case, Floor 1, Comms Space A (a Room identifier), Rack1, then it’s ‘U’ number 18, then ‘yy’ is the port number. Taking use of the standard further, multiple rooms, multiple cabinets, we end up with 1AR1-18:yy. Looking at a Faceplate, a port labelled 18:01 tells me I’m looking for patch panel port 1, in ‘U’ 18 in the cabinet. With this solution, patch panels don’t need to be relabelled. Now, using a standard such as 606B, for small installations, we label ports xx:yy at the wall faceplate, where ‘xx’ is the ‘U’ number in the cabinet where the patch panel is, and ‘yy’ is the port number. In the past, if we used to have an install of 48 cable runs, involving 2 x 24 Port Patch Panels, we used to re-label the second panel for numbers 25 through 48. We have very loosely taken to following TIA 606B labelling standard (although I believe 606C is now in place)
